Barry Trotz: Capitals will be judged on 2016

first_imgBarry Trotz joined Nestor to talk all things Washington Capitals one day after Alex Ovechkin scored his 500th career goal for the current #1 seed in the NHL.Coach Trotz made it clear that he’s been very impressed with Ovechkin since joining the organization in 2014…“I came from another team and you see Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals from afar,” Trotz said. “Now that you realize the magnitude of what Alex is able to do and how quickly he’s done some things in this game, you realize that you’re among greatness. He’s a Hall of Fame player. He’s worldwide in terms of fame. But what he’s been able to do for so long, when the game has gotten harder to score goals and all the expectations and pressure that’s been put on him from Day 1 to carry the Capitals…it’s good to see how he’s transforming himself from a young talent to one of the great players and great leaders in the National Hockey League.”Although Trotz says they’ve accomplished all that they set out to accomplish in 2015, now that the calendar has flipped, he knows they’ll be judged more on what they do in 2016 when the playoffs come around.“We talked about to our group last week…let’s just review 2015 as a whole, you know, the 365 days,” Trotz said. “We had the best record in the National Hockey League. We had like 119 points, we were first in goals, top in power plays…we accomplished a lot of things in 2015 that we set our sights on doing, but we’re really going to be judged on 2016.”“We feel we have a good team, a team that can win the Stanley Cup,” Trotz said. “We are one of the contenders. To hear more of Barry’s thoughts as he joined us for nearly 20 minutes, you can listen right here:Audio Playerhttp://c631904.r4.cf2.rackcdn.com/Barry%20Trotz%20Caps%20011315.mp300:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.last_img read more
