Fourth-year University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey defenceman Cristine Chao was named a second team all-Canadian at the 2019 U SPORTS awards gala on Wednesday night (March 13) in Charlottetown, P.E.I.Chao becomes the first Varsity Blue to earn all-Canadian honours since standout goaltender Nicole Kesteris in 2013-14.”Cristine has been solid for us this season, both defensively and on the attack,” said Varsity Blues head coach Vicky Sunohara. “She worked hard on her fitness during the off season and it has definitely paid off. We call on her to play in all situations and shut down our opponent’s top line.”The Toronto native was named both the OUA defenceman of the year and the most sportsmanlike player, while also earning OUA first team all-star honours this season.A commerce major, Chao led all OUA defencemen in goals (7) and points (17) in 24 regular season games this year. Now a three-time OUA all-star, Chao quarterbacked Toronto’s powerplay to a No. 1 rating, all while amassing only four penalty minutes all season.The Blues open the 2019 U SPORTS championships versus the top-seeded Alberta Pandas on Friday at 2 p.m., EST.
