House approves Rep Garcías SmartZone bill to boost local economies create jobs

first_img Communities interested in developing a SmartZone satellite are one step closer after legislation introduced by Rep. Daniela García passed the House today.“SmartZones are designated areas of innovation in communities designed to spur economic growth with technological efforts and entrepreneurship, as well as create jobs that attract talent,” said Rep. García, R-Holland.House Bill 4226 permits up to six new satellite SmartZones focused on creating new jobs and recruiting and retaining talent across Michigan. Rep. García said the additional satellites will allow communities in the 90th House District to submit an application for SmartZone satellite status and provide another boost to the local economy.“SmartZones demonstrate how collaborative relationships can have a positive impact on a community,” Rep. García said. “Utilizing these proven local economic development models across the state will yield more successes and increased private sector investment. I’m thrilled that my hometown of Holland will have the ability to apply for a SmartZone satellite designation through the enactment of my legislation.”As one of fifteen SmartZones throughout Michigan, the Grand Rapids cluster is anchored by the Medical Mile.“West Michigan’s ‘Medical Mile’ is an example of a high-performing SmartZone that has markedly enriched our community, and this legislation will help create similar opportunities across the state,” said Rep. García.In Holland Township, Rep. García said the MSU Bioeconomy Institute will serve a similar role for SmartZone satellite expansion.“With the expansion of SmartZone satellites, MSU’s 35,000 square feet of space can be used as an incubator for entrepreneurial efforts,” Rep García said. “Local partnerships and collaborations have been critically important in making Ottawa County economically strong and a SmartZone satellite will help to continue the great progress that has already been achieved.”HB 4226 will be considered further in the Senate.
