Cypriot athletes praised after great Games

first_imgCYPRIOT athletes competing in this year`s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow managed to secure a total of eight medals – two gold, four silver and two bronze – ranking Cyprus 14th from a total of 71 countries.Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides has said that the athletes have made Cyprus proud.In a written statement on Monday, Christodoulides “warmly congratulates” the Cypriot mission and all those who contributed to a successful Cypriot participation in the Games on behalf of the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and the government.He congratulates in particular Cypriot athletes whose performances were better than past Commonwealth Games, “making Cyprus feel proud”.Cypriot medalists and those who participated but didn’t win a medal, contributed with their efforts in the recognition of Cypiot sport.Shooter Giorgos Achilleos and weightlifter Dimitris Minasides successfully claimed a gold medal each.Cypriot silver medalists in the Games include Andreas Krassas in judo, Apostolos Parellis in discus throw, Georgia Konstantinidou in trap shooting and Kyriakos Ioannou in high jump.Anri Eleftheriou in shooting and Themida Christodoulidou in individual clubs brought a bronze each home. The Games` curtain came down officially with the closing ceremony on Sunday evening.The Cypriot team returns home on Tuesday.last_img
